A swimmer who went missing in Floyd Fork after he and two others were swept away by a fast-moving current has been found following a two-day search.
Multiple agencies returned to the water and shoreline early Monday morning, rotating crews every four hours as they searched for the missing man.
Search teams used at least four boats, crews on foot and a K-9 unit to cover the area where the man was last seen near the Bardstown Road entrance to The Parklands.
Around 4 p.m., officials said they found the swimmer and their body was recovered from the water. Their identity is not being released until family is notified by the coroner.
Officials said while water levels had dropped since Sunday the current remained dangerous.
“The water has come down. It’s still very, very swift, but the velocity has dropped, so that helps us a little bit,” Fern Creek Fire Assistant Chief Dewayne Hutchens said.
The search was complicated by debris left behind from weekend flooding, along with extreme heat.
“You’re dealing with tree limbs in the water and debris in the water from the floods that happened Saturday, in addition to the heat. Both of those together create a complexity that’s difficult to overcome sometimes,” Hutchens said.
Investigators said the group was attending a family gathering and swimming in Floyds Fork when one man went underwater.
Two others jumped in to try to save him, but they were also swept away by the current. Those two men were rescued Sunday afternoon, but the third man remains missing.
Crews used a grid search to focus on the area where the man was last seen. Hutchens said victims in swift water can become trapped by debris, making the search more challenging.
They searched nearly eight miles downstream after the swimmer went missing.
LMPD is conducting a death investigation.
