(TNND) — Iran launched drone and missile attacks on Sunday targeting Bahrain and Kuwait.
This latest attack comes as a response to new U.S. airstrikes against the Islamic Republic, and a threatened “complete halt” in negotiations to end the war if the U.S. continues attacking.
The exchange of strikes is a result of recent efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz without Iran’s direct oversight and further imperiling talks for a lasting ceasefire. A multinational maritime body overseen by the U.S. Navy said on Saturday that it would expand a route near Oman for inbound and outbound Strait traffic, creating a new point of contention with Tehran.
The Strait of Hormuz has long been considered an international passageway by the global community, despite its location in Iran and Oman’s territorial waters. But in recent days, Iran has attacked vessels going through a route on the Omani side in an evacuation effort backed by a United Nations agency.
Iran has maintained that it must be the sole governor of the strait and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated that claim on Sunday.
For the past few weeks, the U.S. and Iran have been negotiating terms of an interim deal that includes shipping arrangements on the strait, the removal of a U.S. blockade on Iranian ports and sanctions on Iran as well as the future of Iran's highly enriched uranium stockpile.
Under the memorandum of understanding signed earlier this month by both countries, the sides have 60 days to come to an agreement.
The purpose of the interim deal is to stop fighting on all fronts before certain important issues can be discussed. But continued fighting in Lebanon, where an Israeli soldier was killed by Hezbollah fire on Sunday as well as the exchange of crossfire, threatens the agreement.
