Delhi’s Patiala House court on June 29 deferred taking cognisance of the charge sheet filed by Delhi Police against leaders and workers of the Indian Youth Congress. The court was informed that the sanction required for cognisance under Section 217 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) was still awaited and that obtaining it would take time.
The Delhi Police submitted the charge sheet on April 27 after completing the investigation without the sanction. The case relates to a protest held during the global AI Impact Summit at Bharat Mandapam, leading to a First Information Report (FIR) being lodged in February 2026.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Mridul Gupta, after hearing submissions from Special Public Prosecutor Prashant Prakash and Investigation Officer Rohit Kumar, deferred cognisance. The Special Public Prosecutor requested the court to take cognisance of the primary charge sheet, stating that the sanction order would be submitted in a supplementary charge sheet.
The court questioned, “How much time will it take to obtain the sanction?” The Special Public Prosecutor responded that it would require at least two months. Subsequently, the court directed the investigation officer to expedite the process and scheduled the matter for cognisance on September 28.
Indian Youth Congress President Udai Bhanu Chib was granted bail on February 28, while nine other accused received bail on March 1. The arrested individuals include Krishna Hari, Kundan Yadav, Narsimha Yadav, Ajay Singh, Saurabh, Arbaz Khan, Ajay Kumar Vimal, Raja Gujar, Jitendra Yadav, and others.
