RHINEBECK, N.Y. — The village is taking applications for its Hometown Hero banner program honoring local veterans.
The phase one banners, to be hung on municipal streetlights, will specifically honor veterans killed in action or eligible deceased veterans who were honorably discharged.
The village said any Phase 1 applications received by Wednesday, July 1, will be processed immediately. Officials added that the banners will be hung before the 250th annivesary celeberation on Saturday, July 25.
Eligible veterans must meet at least one of the following three conditions.
* Have been a current resident of the village or town of Rhinebeck at the time of their passing.
* Previously lived in the village or town for 20 years or more.
* Have been a resident of the village or town at the time of their enlistment or entry into military service.
Each eligible service member will be limited to one banner for a fee of $200, which includes the banner, brackets and shipping. Replacement banners will be $100.
Officials said participation in the program is on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to available banner locations in the village. Once all available locations have been filled, applicants will be placed on a waiting list
Applicants must submit a completed Hometown Heroes application available at https://bit.ly/4xSLm1I, proof of Rhinebeck residency, proof of military service (DD-214*), the $200 fee (cash or check/money order) made payable to “Village of Rhinebeck” with “Hometown Hero – (Veteran’s Name” in the memo line. A digital (preferred) or hard copy photo of the honoree with at least 300 dpi resolution and a copy of their death certificate are also required.
All required documents should be submitted to Village Clerk Martina McClinton.
