This four-game series is tied 1-1 going into Game 3 on Saturday, when the Detroit Tigers host the Houston Astros. Houston still leads this season’s series heading into today’s penultimate game. The Astros won the first series of the year just 10 days ago in Houston, 2-1. The Astros won a tight opener on Thursday, 2-1, but Detroit bounced back in a big way on Friday night, winning 8-0. The win for the Tigers ended a three-game losing streak for Detroit and ended a three-game winning streak for Houston. The Astros fell to 40-44 on the season with a 20-23 road record, but they are still only 2.5 games back of the first-place Seattle Mariners despite being in fourth in the AL West standings. The Tigers are also fourth in the AL Central standings, but they are 35-47 overall and 23-19 at home. Detroit sits eight games back of the first-place Chicago White Sox. The good news for the Tigers is that they are -131 favorites to win back-to-back and take a 2-1 series lead. They’ll try to do that by starting former Astro Framber Valdez. The lefty is 4-5 with a 3.91 ERA in 89.2 innings. He pitched against his former team in the last series at home and went six innings without giving up an earned run and striking out six, but he didn’t factor in the decision in a game that Detroit lost 4-2. Houston will counter with Kai-Wei Teng, who is 4-6 with a 4.03 ERA in 60.1 innings.

Detroit was in complete control on Friday, which was a nice bounce back from the opener when 10 Tigers struck out against Tatsuya Imai in the 2-1 Thursday loss. The Tigers pulled a 180 in Game 2 in large part due to starter Keider Montero. The righty went seven scoreless innings while only giving up five hits to improve to 4-5. Emmanuel De Jesus, also from Venezuela, didn’t give up another hit in relief to help Detroit cruise to victory despite only having six hits. Spencer Arrighetti struggled in three innings, giving up all eight runs while walking five but striking out seven, to fall to 7-4. Detroit scored all of its runs in the third inning. Kerry Carpenter hit a two-run homer in the third, and then Colt Keith hit a solo shot to kick things off in the fourth. Then James Outman hit a three-run homer, giving the Tigers a seven-run lead, where they never had to look back the rest of the game.
