(ABC 6 News)–Artificial intelligence is becoming a bigger part of daily life. Experts say it could eventually affect electric bills.
AI relies on massive data centers filled with thousands of computer servers that consume huge amounts of electricity and water. As more facilities are built, utility companies may need costly upgrades to power grids and infrastructure.
Consumer advocates worry those costs could be passed on to homeowners.
Opposing this view, technology companies argue data centers create jobs and boost local economies.
Congress is now considering the Ratepayer Protection Act, which would require large energy users, including many AI data centers, to pay a greater share of power grid upgrade costs.
The debate centers on one key question: who should pay for the infrastructure needed to support the AI boom?
