One of Tom Cruise‘s most anticipated movies in recent memory is not a Mission: Impossible sequel or another Top Gun follow-up. No, it’s the ambitious comedy epic Digger, the latest directorial effort from Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu. Judging by the latest trailer, the upcoming film may feature Cruise’s most daring role yet, and he is not performing any crazy stunts (that we know of so far).
Warner Bros. has released a new “Tom Cruise Retrospective” trailer for Digger, which is set to hit theaters on Oct. 26 in IMAX. The starts off with a montage of Cruise’s most iconic films, from Top Gun to Mission: Impossible. However, the last 30 seconds reveal all-new footage from Digger, including Cruise under heavy makeup hyping himself up before possibly giving a speech.
In the film, Cruise transforms himself into Digger Rockwell, an elderly oil baron with a heavy Southern accent whose company has seemingly caused an ecological disaster. Digger is tasked with cleaning up the mess he started and saving the world from impending nuclear war. The brief footage balances sweeping visuals and a truly outrageous performance by Cruise that will surely go down as one of his most memorable.
Alongside Cruise, Digger features a star-studded cast fit for a project that boasts an insane logline and lead performance. Fresh off her fan-favorite role in Project Hail Mary, Sandra Hüller is featured in the upcoming comedy in addition to Emmy winner John Goodman, who plays the President of the United States. The rest of the ensemble is no less impressive, as it includes Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Michael Stuhlbarg, Emma D’Arcy, Robert John Burke, and Burn Gorman.
With the Mission: Impossible franchise behind him, Cruise has found himself taking on his most ambitious on-screen transformation yet. Digger brings the actor back to his eccentric side as an actor, in a way that has not been seen since his memorable role in Tropic Thunder as a ruthless Hollywood producer. But Iñárritu’s new film looks like much more than just a straightforward comedy, as it balances epic storytelling and some relevant thematic ideas. If Cruise pulls it off, which appears to be likely judging by the early footage, he could be well in place to nab some major nominations during the next awards season.
Cruise’s break from starring in major action blockbusters may be short-lived, as he is set to return for a third Top Gun, which is now looking for a new director. It was previously rumored that he was also looking to reprise his role for a long-awaited Edge of Tomorrow sequel this year, but that report was squashed. With Mission: Impossible in the rearview mirror, Cruise is now balancing major blockbusters with more dramatic, character-based efforts like Digger.
