CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WCNC) — Utah is becoming a real-world test case for using AI in healthcare.
The state is allowing a program that uses artificial intelligence to help renew prescriptions for some common medications. The goal is to make it easier for patients to get refills, especially as doctor shortages continue across parts of the country.

Right now, human doctors still review those decisions before medications are sent to the pharmacy.
Supporters said AI could save time, reduce paperwork and improve access to care. Early results show doctors agreed with most of the AI’s recommendations, but many physicians are concerned.
They worry that AI could miss important symptoms, pose safety risks and make it harder to determine who is responsible if something goes wrong.
The debate could help determine how much of your future healthcare is handled by a doctor and how much is handled by AI.
