Ready for your next great horror obsession? Good, because Hollywood's gonna give it to you. Following the staggering critical and commercial success of YouTuber-turned-feature-filmmaker Curry Barker's first studio movie, 'One Wish Willow' thrill-ride Obsession, THR is reporting that horror's latest enfant terrible has just set his third big-screen chiller at Universal and Blumhouse Atomic Monster. And yes, we did just say third.
In case you weren't already aware, before Obsession even landed in cinemas last month, imprinting itself on the cultural consciousness to the tune of $297 million (and counting), Curry Barker had already shot his sophomore studio feature, Anything But Ghosts. Starring Aaron Paul, Cooper Tomlinson, Bryce Dallas Howard, Violet McGraw, Chris Reinacher, and Barker himself, that movie — a Focus Features release which finished shooting in April — follows two fake paranormal investigators who find themselves coming face-to-face with actual ghosts on the job as their dodgy business practices come undone. As for what this new project — which Barker is set to write, produce, and direct — entails, all we know thus far is that it's another horror movie and Universal and Blumhouse Atomic Monster paid an eight-figure fee to land it.
“This film is something I’ve been excited to make for a while, and I’m thrilled to be reteaming with Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Universal Film Group for it,” Barker said of this new movie in a statement shared by THR. “They’ve built the kind of home for bold, original storytelling that every filmmaker dreams of, and I couldn’t imagine better collaborators for this film.” Added Blumhouse Atomic Monster's James Wan and Jason Blum: "With Obsession, Curry did what only a handful of filmmakers manage in a generation: he made something wholly original that connected with a massive audience, and that connection is what we care about most. The best filmmakers can work anywhere, and we are proud to have a growing slate with Curry. Getting to put this project in front of the fans his work speaks to is the whole reason we do this.”
As horror enters what feels like a new golden era, it seems already that Curry Barker has announced himself as one of the genre's new wave luminaries alongside the likes of Kane Parsons (Backrooms), Danny and Michael Philippou (Talk To Me, Bring Her Back), Nia DaCosta (28 Years Later: The Bone Temple), and Zach Cregger (Weapons). And while we wouldn't recommend dabbling with the magic of the One Wish Willow by any means, our wish — for more Barker films — has come true. Here's hoping Anything But Ghosts and this new as-yet-unnamed project will have as just obsessed as his last… although perhaps with just a few less head smashings along the way. No worries if not.
