LOGAN — Summerfest Arts Faire will be held this weekend, June 18-20, at the Cache County Fairgrounds located at 490 S. 500 W. in Logan. The doors open at 11 a.m. and close at 11 p.m.
This is the 42nd year of a gathering of artists, crafters, and entertainers.
Shirlene Davis, the executive director of the summer’s biggest event, was in the middle of getting things set up on Wednesday.
They have 172 participants this year. It is the largest Summerfest they’ve had while she’s led the effort.
“We have artists from Pennsylvania, California, and Florida that are here as well as our regional artists here this year,” Davis said. “This year we have more artists, more food trucks, and more entertainment than ever.”
The first year Davis started she had 259 applications for booths. This year they had 416 applications.
“We usually have 30-31 food trucks from all over the region,” she said. “This year we have 33 food trucks from all over the area, including Idaho.”
There will be 37 performers on both the indoor and outdoor stages. Davis said she was excited to have a group from Idaho Falls called The Opskamatrists. They are a high-energy band with a horn section to go with their guitars and drums.
“Bring your dancing shoes,” Davis said. “I’m excited about bringing this group to the stage.”
The Creation Station will be active for hands-on interactive art for children. There will be five non-profits providing art experiences while parents look at the Connects bus. The bus, decorated with student art, will be on hand to highlight creativity in local schools.
“We are grateful for all of our volunteers, and we could still use some,” she said. “People can still sign up.”
This is a free event where people can come with their children, and it won’t cost one dime to come down and experience art in Logan.
Dick Spenser, a wildlife photographer from the Preston area, was hanging his photographs Wednesday.
“I’ve been coming here for a lot of years,” he said. “This is good exposure for my work.”
Nikki Root, a glass artist, has been attending Summerfest for the past 16 years.
“This is such a wonderful thing,” she said. “The people here are so nice and good to work with.”
Root started doing stained glass and branched off, using different techniques to put her glass objects together to create her art.
K. L. Rasmussen, a local potter, has been bringing his pottery to Summerfest since it began.
“It’s a good venue,” he said. “It is close to our home in Hyrum, and a lot of local people can see my work.”
His wife, Keri, said over the years Summerfest has been good to them.
“It’s a good and solid venue for us,” she said. “It has treated us well over the years.”
The Rasmussens have only missed a couple of Summerfests since it started but have enjoyed the atmosphere over the years.
Summerfest Arts Faire gathers artists from across the country showcasing their works across various mediums.
Admission is free, thanks to the support from the Cache County RAPZ Tax, Logan City Cultural Arts Grant, and others.
