Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan are bringing their family to the United Kingdom for a rare trip next month, according to British media reports.
Harry, 41, will be joined by wife Meghan, 44, and their two children for a visit to England in July, Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper reported Wednesday, June 17.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex dramatically left the United Kingdom in 2020 – an event dubbed “Megxit,” a play on Brexit, Britain’s exit from the European Union. They now live in California with kids Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5.
The trip will mark the first time the Sussex family has visited Harry’s home country since June 2022, when the family of four joined a celebration to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign. Meghan was last in the United Kingdom in September 2022, for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth.
USA TODAY has reached out to Harry and Meghan‘s spokesperson for comment.
Harry has cited significant concerns for the safety of his family, citing their lack of security on British soil as a part of the family falling out and a reason for not returning. The duke’s security was downgraded after he stepped back from royal life and duties.
Last year he lost an appeal in a U.K. court over the levels of security he and his family are entitled to while spending time in Britain. It is unclear what security arrangements will be for the Sussexes expected visit next month.
Following their retreat from the royal spotlight and their move to the U.S., relations between the Sussexes and the wider royal family were plunged into further uncertainty after they gave an explosive interview to Oprah Winfrey in 2021, during which they alleged racism within the family and cited feelings of rejection.
Harry’s brother, Prince William, responded by defending the monarchy, “We’re very much not a racist family.” At the time, Buckingham Palace said the Queen Elizabeth II was “saddened” by the remarks.
Harry also criticized the family in his memoir, “Spare” and shared that he and William urged their father King Charles III not to marry Camilla. He also alleged that the brothers’ rift had been brewing for a long time.
The king has not seen his grandchildren Archie and Lilibet in around four years. It is unclear if the monarch will spend time with them next month. Archie was born in the United Kingdom in 2019, whereas sister Lilibet was born in the U.S.
In an interview with the BBC last year, the estranged prince expressed a desire to move on from the family drama.
“I would love reconciliation with my family,” he said. “There’s no point continuing to fight any more, life is precious.”
In September, Harry and his father Charles did indeed meet. It was their first face-to-face meeting since 2024. The meeting took place at Clarence House, a royal residence in London. Though the meeting lasted just under an hour, many interpreted the move as a positive step in smoothing over the very public royal rift.
