Latest updates on fatal plane crash on Loop 20 in Laredo – KGNS

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – One person died and five others were hospitalized after a plane made an emergency crash landing on Loop 20.
The crash happened after 10 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16, on the north and southbound lanes of Loop 20 near the City Hall Annex. Six people were on board the private aircraft.
Laredo police said the airport tower reported the plane lost contact after the pilot reported mechanical issues. A crash landing was reported shortly after.
Five passengers were taken to the hospital in stable condition. Authorities have not released information about the passengers as they work to contact family members.
“We have six souls that were inside the aircraft. Regrettably and tragically, we do have to report that there is one decedent involved in this crash,” said Joe Baeza of the Laredo Police Department. “We’re not going to give many details as to who the person was, their sex, their age or anything else, because the notification, official notification of next of kin, has not taken place.”
The FBI and NTSB will take over the investigation.
Both northbound and southbound lanes on Loop 20 are closed between highways 359 and 59, or Saunders St. The frontage roads are also closed.
TxDOT is advising northbound drivers to exit on 359. Southbound traffic must detour on Saunders. Laredo police advise drivers traveling north and south to take Bartlett, Arkansas or I-35.
Police said Loop 20 will be closed for the majority of Wednesday, June 17.
Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño said his thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones affected by the tragedy.
Treviño urged the public to avoid speculation as investigators work to determine what happened, noting that aviation investigations require a thorough review of the facts.
The mayor said he was at the scene and praised the response of first responders who worked to contain the fire, secure the area and protect the public.
