Malaysia and Russia are looking to deepen cooperation in energy, digital technology and trade following talks between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said both leaders discussed a wide range of bilateral issues, including opportunities to strengthen collaboration in the energy sector, a strategic area for both nations.
The leaders also explored ways to expand economic cooperation and welcomed Russia’s commitment to providing long-term collaboration in energy and oil supply.
Beyond energy, discussions covered potential partnerships in emerging technologies, cybersecurity, digitalisation, artificial intelligence (AI), modern agriculture and pharmaceuticals.
Anwar and Putin also exchanged views on facilitating people-to-people movement through visa liberalisation, while exploring mechanisms to boost bilateral trade and investment using local currencies, namely the ringgit and ruble.
It said that the government remains committed to taking strategic and proactive measures to enhance Malaysia’s energy security through international partnerships that can ensure the stability, sustainability and resilience of the country’s energy supply.
The statement added that such efforts are vital to safeguarding public interests and supporting long-term economic prosperity.
