Georgia Republicans rejected a proposal to redraw political maps before the start of a special session Wednesday.
Gov. Brian Kemp called on lawmakers to consider new lines for the 2028 elections, but Republican House leaders said potential changes should occur after a deliberative process with public input. In their letter to Kemp, the lawmakers also wrote that legal challenges are still ongoing against some of their current districts.
The General Assembly said it would still consider other agenda items including how Georgia counts ballots.
Redistricting was a top priority for the governor and for President Donald Trump.
