Two sisters died early Monday after a fire tore through a single-family home in Bellingham, Massachusetts.
Crews responded just before 1 a.m. to the single-family home at Temi Road and found heavy fire upon arrival. The blaze quickly escalated to a second alarm.
“First arriving units on scene found heavy fire through the roof and the rear of the structure. We also had confirmed reports of two people in the home, trapped,” Bellingham Fire Department Chief Bill Miller said. “With the amount of fire that was here when we arrived, I would say, yes, it had been burning for a while.”
Two people were pulled from the home and taken to Milford Regional Medical Center, where they later died. Their names were not released; however, officials said they were sisters.
“One victim was found in the bedroom. One victim was found in the hallway,” Miller said.
“When I was walking earlier today, I did see a bunch of people hugging each other earlier today. and oh my gosh, it broke my heart. The whole thing breaks my heart just knowing they were not able to get out,” Bellingham resident Cheryl Giancola said.
Pam Stoddard lived next door to one of the victims for 37 years.
“She loved to play pool. She was they were all very outgoing. She just loved being with people,” Stoddard said. “Like I said, she really enjoyed playing pool. And then she had a Corvette, which she liked to drive, but then she eventually sold it.”
A cat also died in the fire.
No firefighters were injured during the incident.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene to help determine what led to the fire.
