He described Mahomes as “one of the most prolific quarterbacks to ever play the game,” adding that he “changed the culture of our building and has led us in the most successful era in our franchise’s history.“That last part is not hyperbole. Mahomes is 29 years old and has already led Kansas City to five Super Bowl appearances and three championships. By the numbers alone, the deal looks justifiable. Still, the contract comes with a notable asterisk. Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL in December and is currently working his way back. He is expected to be ready for the season, and the Chiefs open on Monday Night Football against the Denver Broncos on September 14.For a franchise betting big on Mahomes through 2033, health is the only real variable.
