Iran will play its opening Group G match of the World Cup against New Zealand in Los Angeles on Monday, with the fixture taking place against a backdrop of ongoing political tensions.
According to Reuters, Iran enters the tournament after uncertainty over its participation in the competition due to recent regional tensions and conflict.
The match comes as tensions between Iran and the United States continue, adding an extra layer of sensitivity to the encounter.
Despite reports of progress in negotiations aimed at easing tensions between Tehran and Washington, challenges surrounding the Iranian team have persisted.
Officials from the Iran Football Federation have criticized FIFA after 15 members of the federation reportedly failed to obtain visas to attend the tournament.
In recent days, the atmosphere in Los Angeles has also been affected by these developments. During the opening ceremony, some spectators reportedly reacted as the Iranian flag entered the venue, and similar scenes could occur during Monday’s match.
Iran has been drawn into Group G and will seek to secure a place in the knockout stages despite the political tensions surrounding the tournament.
