NVRO Metals is in the process of acquiring an already built processing facility and a historical critical minerals resource in Northern Australia for approximately $20 million.
NVRO Metals Ltd. (formerly EnviroGold Global Ltd.) has taken a major step toward commercial deployment of its proprietary metals recovery technology by securing an industrial-scale processing complex in Australia’s Northern Territory that could serve as both a production center for critical minerals and a launch platform for global deployment of the company’s NVRO Process.
Under a deal announced June 10, the British Columbia-based company agreed to acquire Northern Territories Resources Pty Ltd., an Australian mining and exploration company that owns a copper-cobalt-silver-lead-zinc-nickel project roughly 35 miles south of Darwin.
The acquisition provides NVRO with something many emerging mining technologies struggle to obtain: an industrial-scale facility capable of bridging the gap between successful pilot testing and commercial operations.
At the center of the transaction is a fully constructed hydrometallurgical processing plant and associated infrastructure that NVRO intends to transform into what it calls the NVRO Metals Hub – a commercial-scale platform designed to process both company-owned resources and third-party feedstocks using the proprietary NVRO Process.
The economics of the acquisition are particularly compelling. NVRO is acquiring the processing facility, associated infrastructure, and mineral property package for approximately $20 million, despite estimates that the plant alone cost roughly $148 million to construct before the previous owner entered insolvency proceedings.
“The establishment of the NVRO Metals Hub is a significant milestone in the company’s history,” said NVRO Executive Chairman David Cam. “For the first time, we have brought together proprietary technology, industrial-scale processing infrastructure, and near-term production capability within a single platform.”
Cam says the combination positions the company to generate operating cash flow while simultaneously advancing commercialization of the NVRO Process.
While NVRO is headquartered in Canada, much of the company’s commercialization work is already underway in Australia.
Its Project Development Facility in Fremantle, Western Australia, hosts a pilot-scale NVRO Process plant that is being used to evaluate feedstocks from potential clients and advance the technology toward commercial deployment.
The NVRO Process is designed to recover precious, base, and critical metals from mine tailings, waste rock, and sulfide materials while simultaneously oxidizing sulfides that can contribute to long-term environmental liabilities.
One of the most prominent projects currently being evaluated is to recover some of the $6.8 billion of metals calculated to be contained in the tailings at Hecla Mining Company’s Greens Creek silver mine in Southeast Alaska.
Earlier bench-scale testing demonstrated recoveries of 98.1% of silver and 99.5% of gold from the mine’s tailings.
Separate testing has indicated the process can recover roughly 95% of secondary metals, such as copper and between 60% and 90% of less common but often valuable tertiary metals.
Beyond metals recovery, the process is designed to reduce long-term environmental risks by oxidizing sulfides that can generate acid rock drainage while producing material potentially suitable for backfill or aggregate applications.
Hecla recently shipped samples to the Fremantle facility for pilot-scale processing.
The ongoing Greens Creek program is expected to play a key role in advancing the technology toward Technology Readiness Level 8, a milestone indicating successful demonstration at near-commercial scale.
“This program defines a clear pathway to TRL 9 and full commercial deployment, supporting EnviroGold’s strategy to deliver an industrial-scale process and advance projects to revenue-generating operations,” said NVRO Metals CEO Grant Freeman earlier this year.
This aligns with plans for a commercial installation at the company’s envisioned NVRO Metals Hub in Australia’s Northern Territory.
“The NVRO Metals Hub provides the infrastructure required to accelerate global deployment of the NVRO Process and support multiple customer opportunities,” Freeman said.
The Northern Territory project offers more than just processing infrastructure.
The property hosts oxide and sulfide mineralization enriched with copper, cobalt, nickel, silver, lead, and zinc – metals that could provide feedstock for near-term production while demonstrating the commercial capabilities of the NVRO Process.
Management believes the existing solvent extraction and electrowinning circuits installed at the site could support future production of copper, cobalt, and nickel products from oxide material through heap leaching operations.
The company has initiated work on an updated resource estimate to establish a modern industry-compliant assessment of the property’s mineral inventory.
NVRO also plans to conduct drilling to obtain representative oxide and sulfide samples for additional metallurgical testing.
Sulfide samples will be processed through the pilot-scale facility in Fremantle, where the results are expected to provide the data needed for future engineering and feasibility studies evaluating commercial installation of the NVRO Process at the Northern Territory operation.
For NVRO, the ability to repurpose existing infrastructure rather than build entirely new facilities from the ground up offers an opportunity to shrink both capital costs and development timelines – accelerating the company’s transformation from technology developer to critical metals producer.
“We believe the NVRO Metals Hub expands the company’s commercial opportunities and positions us for critical minerals production from sulphide minerals,” Freeman said.
NVRO is targeting initial production from the Northern Territory hub by the end of 2027.
