Canada Post is preparing to convert an additional 485,000 homes across Canada from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes in 2027, as part of the Crown corporation’s attempt to modernize and return to financial self-sustainability.
In a statement released on Thursday, the postal service said the additional addresses are “on top of the 136,000 addresses in 13 communities already identified for conversion in late 2026 or early 2027.”

The next phase of its transformation will affect 37 communities across seven provinces: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia.
Ontario will see the most conversions, with more than 158,000 addresses affected. Quebec follows with 139,000, while B.C. has 81,000 and Alberta will have 56,000. Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Manitoba will each have 17,000.
In the coming weeks and months, the Crown corporation says it plans on initiating discussions with local governments in the communities to begin preparing for conversions in 2027.
A full list of the postal codes scheduled for conversion to date is available on Canada Post’s website.
The 485,000 new addresses are part of a five-year national conversion program, in which Canada Post will convert a total of four million addresses into community mailboxes.
According to Canada Post, “converting an address from door-to-door delivery to a community mailbox typically takes months,” but the service will engage with “local governments as it identifies suitable locations for community mailbox sites.”
The move follows years of uncertainty for the nation’s postal operator, as it faces a deteriorating financial situation. In the first quarter of 2026, the service recorded a pre-tax loss of $205 million, due to revenue and volume declining across all lines of business.
Canada Post says the move to community mailboxes will help the corporation by reducing costs, as delivering to the door “costs significantly more” than to a community mailbox.
Canada Post will be responsible for maintaining and servicing all community mailboxes to ensure safety and accessibility, including clearing snow and fixing or replacing locks.
