Garmin is updating its software for the Vivoactive 5 to version 15.01. Since this is a beta update, it will not be rolled out to all users, but only to those participating in the beta program. This update can be installed quite easily, users simply need to request the update directly on the watch. Manually transferring files is not required. While beta updates typically carry a higher risk of new bugs, this particular beta update is intended to actually fix a bug. Specifically, there were issues with downloaded golf course maps in the previous software version.
The short changelog also includes updates for the tracking of breathing rates as well as the passcode function, which is basically a numerical password for the watch. Entering the passcode is required when the Garmin smartwatch is taken off the wrist, so it protects the potentially sensitive health data and also works as a theft deterrent. Previous software updates, such as versions 14.10 and 14.07, have also focused on similarly minor changes or bug fixes. The Garmin Vivoactive 5 (from $229 on Amazon) is a fitness smartwatch with an AMOLED display that sports a GNSS module, local music playback and numerous other features.
