Apple’s first iOS 27 developer beta lays the groundwork for what now appears to be a super-probable foldable iPhone. Code references and developer documentation indicate that Apple is preparing iOS to support more screen sizes and aspect ratios, including two separate displays.
In the beta, there are terms like “foldState” and “angleDegrees” that current iPhones don’t use. These suggest that iOS might be able to determine whether a device is open, closed, or at a specific angle. There’s also a new feature that tracks the number of built-in displays, as reported by our colleagues at Mashable.
At this week’s WWDC 2026, Apple told developers to design for a “dynamic range” of sizes and with a flow that their apps can use to switch between closed and open layouts. Xcode now has new tools, including a resizable iOS Simulator and updated SwiftUI previews. These tools let developers test their app interfaces on different screen sizes before foldable devices are available.
Apart from the beta, reports have been saying for quite some time that the device will use a book‑style design with a roughly 7.8-inch inner display, a smaller outer panel, a titanium frame, and a new hinge system, likely at a price above current Pro Max models.
None of these hardware details appear directly in iOS 27, but the software groundwork and long‑running foldable rumors now align in a way that is hard to ignore, even for naysayers.
