BYD India has officially introduced its globally acclaimed DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligent) hybrid technology in the country. While industry expectations were centred around the launch of a new plug-in hybrid vehicle, BYD has instead chosen to showcase the technology first, signalling its intentions to enter India’s growing hybrid vehicle space in the near future.
The company says its DM-i technology will offer a combined driving range of more than 1,200 km and serve as a bridge between conventional ICE vehicles and full battery electric vehicles (BEVs). BYD has confirmed that the technology will play a key role in its India roadmap going forward, although it has not yet revealed which vehicle will debut the system.
Unlike conventional strong hybrids, where the petrol engine remains the primary source of propulsion and the electric motor plays a supporting role, BYD’s DM-i system follows an electric-first philosophy. In most driving situations, the vehicle operates using electric power, while the petrol engine either functions as a generator to charge the battery or assists the electric motor when additional performance is required. Depending on driving conditions, the system can switch between pure EV mode, series hybrid mode and parallel hybrid mode.
At the heart of the setup is BYD’s 1.5-litre Xiaoyun petrol engine, which the company claims delivers thermal efficiency of 43.04%, among the highest in the industry. The system is paired with BYD’s Blade Battery technology that also underpins the brand’s electric vehicle lineup.
BYD highlighted its long-standing experience in plug-in hybrid technology. The company launched the world’s first mass-produced PHEV, the F3DM, back in 2008 and has since sold more than 8 million plug-in hybrid vehicles globally. Today, BYD claims over 35% share of the global PHEV market, making it one of the largest hybrid vehicle manufacturers in the world. The company also stated that its cumulative customer base in India has crossed 14,000 units.
The timing of DM-i’s arrival is noteworthy. Hybrid vehicles are witnessing renewed interest in India as buyers look for better fuel efficiency without fully committing to EV ownership. Concerns around charging infrastructure, long-distance usability and charging times continue to influence purchasing decisions for many consumers.
BYD’s DM-i technology aims to address these concerns by offering substantial electric-only driving capability while retaining the convenience of a petrol engine for longer journeys. The company claims fuel consumption of just 4.8 litres per 100 km under NEDC testing conditions, along with acceleration performance comparable to 2.0-litre turbo petrol vehicles.
While the technology showcase is significant, BYD stopped short of announcing a specific model for India. Earlier expectations had suggested that a DM-i based SUV or sedan could debut alongside the technology. For now, the announcement serves as a preview of BYD’s next phase in India. The eventual launch of a DM-i-equipped vehicle will also mark BYD’s entry into the hybrid segment, where it could challenge established players such as Toyota, Maruti Suzuki and Honda.
With hybrids accounting for a growing share of the passenger vehicle market and EV adoption continuing at a gradual pace, BYD appears to be positioning DM-i as a practical middle ground for Indian buyers seeking electrified mobility without range anxiety.
