Bose Corporation has acquired StreamUnlimited Engineering GmbH, a Vienna-based provider of streaming software platforms, hardware modules and connectivity solutions, in a move designed to extend Bose’s audio technologies across a wider range of connected devices and ecosystems.
The transaction strengthens Bose’s Audio Technology business by adding a platform that already serves manufacturers developing connected audio and smart-home products. StreamUnlimited’s technology helps brands bring streaming-enabled devices to market through integrated software, hardware and certification services, positioning the company at a key point in the connected-device value chain.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
The deal reflects growing demand for seamless interoperability across connected products as consumers increasingly engage with audio through smart-home systems, wearables, mobile devices and multi-room entertainment environments. By integrating StreamUnlimited’s capabilities, Bose aims to broaden the reach of its proprietary audio technologies into a wider ecosystem of products and platforms.
“As connected ecosystems scale and become more complex, how devices work together is a central driver of value,” said Nick Smith, president of Bose Audio Technology and chief strategy officer. He noted that StreamUnlimited has established a strong position in the software and systems layer that coordinates interactions among connected devices, creating opportunities for Bose to bring its technologies to additional partners and user experiences.
The acquisition supports Bose’s strategy of commercializing its decades of audio research through technology licensing and business-to-business partnerships. The company’s Audio Technology division packages proprietary capabilities, including Sound by Bose technology and the Bose WaveForm Audio Engine, for integration into products developed by third-party manufacturers. The model allows partners to differentiate their offerings with advanced audio performance while maintaining their own brand identities and product ecosystems.
For StreamUnlimited, the transaction provides access to Bose’s audio engineering resources while preserving the company’s role as a technology provider to a broad range of customers. The company serves manufacturers across premium audio, consumer electronics, custom-installation and smart-home markets, helping bring products from development through mass production.
“We look forward to joining with Bose as we expand StreamUnlimited’s offerings and accelerate the development of next-generation intelligent audio experiences for our customers,” said StreamUnlimited CEO Frits Wittgrefe.
Markus Rutz, the company’s chief technology officer, said the combination creates opportunities to further develop the orchestration technologies that underpin connected audio platforms. He pointed to increasing demand for adaptive and AI-enabled audio ecosystems capable of integrating new streaming services, technologies and user experiences as the market evolves.
Importantly for existing customers, StreamUnlimited said it will continue supporting current and future clients following the acquisition. Its platforms and services will remain interoperable and open for integration with third-party technologies, products and ecosystems, preserving the company’s vendor-neutral approach.
The acquisition highlights a broader shift in the audio industry, where value is increasingly tied not only to sound quality but also to the software infrastructure that enables devices to communicate, coordinate and adapt across connected environments. As smart-home adoption expands and audio experiences become more integrated with broader digital ecosystems, control of the underlying software and orchestration layers is emerging as a strategic advantage.
Founded more than 20 years ago, StreamUnlimited employs more than 100 people across Vienna, Bratislava, Shenzhen and Osaka. Bose, which has spent more than six decades developing consumer and professional audio technologies, has increasingly expanded its reach beyond branded products through partnerships, licensing arrangements and embedded audio solutions across multiple industries.
The combination positions Bose to play a larger role in the rapidly evolving connected-audio market, where manufacturers are seeking both premium sound performance and seamless interoperability across an expanding range of devices and services.
