Delhi Police have solved the murder of a Delhi University (DU) professor within three days, tracing the accused to West Bengal after an intensive investigation involving CCTV analysis, cab-tracking data and coordinated raids across multiple states.
Debosmita Paul, an assistant professor at Shivaji College, was found murdered in her flat in East Delhi’s Vasundhara Enclave.
Investigators later arrested a couple from Bardhaman in West Bengal, who allegedly travelled nearly 1,400 kilometres to carry out the killing before attempting to return home unnoticed.
Police sources said Ramprasad Das and Banshree Das were arrested following a series of raids.
Their minor son has also been detained.
The accused are expected to be produced before a local court, where Delhi Police will seek transit remand to bring them to the national capital for further questioning.
According to officials, investigators began piecing together the sequence of events after examining CCTV footage from the housing complex where Paul lived.
The footage allegedly showed the accused arriving at the apartment complex on Wednesday wearing masks.
Police said they reached the building in a private cab carrying bags and used the staircase to access the sixth floor, where the victim lived.
Investigators believe the couple brought their minor son along to avoid attracting suspicion.
As they were known to the victim, they reportedly gained entry without resistance.
Officials said the accused allegedly used a weapon they had brought with them to kill Paul inside her flat.
The CCTV footage later captured them returning about 30 minutes after the attack, this time in different clothes.
They then left the complex in the same cab that had been waiting outside, police sources said.
The turning point in the investigation came when police identified and questioned the cab driver who had transported the suspects.
Investigators accessed the ride details and travel records linked to the vehicle, allowing them to trace the movements of the passengers.
The information helped police narrow down potential suspects and establish a trail leading back to West Bengal.
Officials said the cab records became a crucial piece of evidence in reconstructing the suspects’ movements before and after the crime.
As the investigation intensified, Delhi Police launched a large-scale operation involving seven dedicated teams.
Police scrutinised the movements of nearly 200 people who had entered the residential complex on the day of the murder.
Investigators shortlisted at least 13 individuals for detailed questioning.
The teams simultaneously carried out raids across four states and questioned hundreds of people as part of the probe.
Authorities said this extensive effort enabled investigators to identify the suspects and eventually track them to Bardhaman.
The accused were arrested there and are currently being interrogated.
During the investigation, police uncovered what they believe was the motive behind the murder.
Officials said Paul had inherited a property in West Bengal following the death of her maternal grandfather.
The property was reportedly worth several crores of rupees.
According to investigators, the arrested couple had been living in the property as tenants and allegedly wanted to gain control of it.
Police said Paul had been pressing them to vacate the premises, leading to a dispute.
Investigators suspect the couple plotted the murder in an attempt to remove the obstacle to acquiring the property.
The case came to light when Paul’s sister, Devarati, alerted police after discovering her sibling’s body.
Officials said the flat had been locked from the outside.
Concerned after repeated phone calls went unanswered, Devarati went to the apartment and eventually forced entry.
Inside, she found Paul dead with a severe head injury and cuts to the veins in her wrist, according to police.
Investigators found no immediate signs of robbery.
Jewellery, cash and other valuables remained untouched inside the flat, prompting officers to focus on other possible motives.
A murder case was subsequently registered, and police launched an investigation that culminated in the arrest of the suspects within 72 hours.
