Apple is set to host its annual Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday at its Cupertino, California, headquarters. This event, marking Tim Cook’s final appearance as the company’s CEO, is anticipated to act as a reset for Apple’s artificial intelligence approach, which has trailed behind those of its rivals.
The conference will continue through June 12. The most significant announcement is expected to be the launch of Apple’s much-delayed, AI-enhanced Siri. The voice assistant debuted on iPhones with great excitement in 2011 but has mostly stagnated since. Its shortcomings have become more apparent with the rise of generative AI models, chatbots, and more recently, AI agents.
Apple first revealed plans for an upgraded AI version of Siri in 2024, but encountered obstacles in releasing it. Although Apple has introduced its Apple Intelligence platform, offering tools for writing, image editing, and Visual Intelligence, this has not eased investor worries that Apple has fallen behind in the AI sector. A strong performance at WWDC could help the company move past these concerns.
It is already known that the updated Siri will operate on Google‘s Gemini AI models instead of Apple’s own technology. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the assistant will gain a dedicated app, and users will interact with it similarly to leading chatbots such as ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. Gurman also notes that Siri will support multi-step commands, enabling users to request multiple tasks in one instruction, and it will be capable of composing emails on their behalf.
The assistant will appear at the top of the iPhone screen within the Dynamic Island. A new search box, accessed by swiping down from the center of the screen’s top edge, will allow users to type questions and commands. Siri will also function within the Camera app, letting users quickly retrieve nutritional data from labels and log it for meal tracking.
Even though Apple does not provide its own advanced frontier AI model, analysts believe the company could benefit substantially from its enhanced AI efforts. Bernstein analyst Mark Newman wrote in a note that Apple Intelligence offers a major chance to transform the company, speed up product upgrade cycles, and boost services revenue. He estimated a 13% increase in earnings per share from faster replacement cycles and an additional 16% EPS gain from selling a premium version of Apple Intelligence.
