Residents in Thoothukudi on Sunday urged the Central government to immediately withdraw the recent hike in domestic LPG cylinder prices, saying the increase has added to the financial burden on households already grappling with rising living costs.
The price of a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder was increased by Rs 29 with effect from June 7. In Chennai, the price has risen from Rs 928.50 to Rs 957.50, drawing concern among homemakers and the general public.
Speaking on the issue, a local named US Sekar said the repeated increase in the prices of commercial LPG cylinders had already contributed to a rise in the cost of essential commodities, and the latest hike in domestic cooking gas prices had further impacted ordinary citizens.
“In recent months, the price of commercial LPG cylinders has been increased repeatedly, leading to a rise in the cost of essential commodities. Now, the Rs 29 increase in domestic cooking gas cylinders used by households has imposed an additional burden on ordinary people,” he told ANI.
“Daily wage workers, middle-class families, and economically weaker sections are particularly affected by this price hike. Continuous increases in the prices of essential goods, petrol, diesel, and cooking gas have significantly raised the cost of living. Therefore, the government should immediately roll back the Rs 29 increase and reduce the price of domestic LPG cylinders,” Sekar added.
Meanwhile, a resident, Annamalai Rajan said the latest increase in domestic LPG prices would adversely affect households and further strain family budgets.
Israel’s military said Sunday that it had intercepted two projectiles launched from Lebanon into Israeli territory, despite a new ceasefire agreement announced this week aimed at ending hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.
“Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in the areas of Yiftah and Ramot Naftali, two projectiles that crossed from Lebanon into Israeli territory were intercepted,” the military reported.
Israel and Lebanon agreed to a new US-brokered ceasefire on Wednesday. However, Hezbollah has rejected the agreement.
Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Sunday said he had sought a report from officials on the recent hike in gas prices and expressed concern over the increase in the price of industrial gas and diesel.
Domestic cooking gas LPG price has been raised by Rs 29 per cylinder, marking the second increase in three months as state-owned fuel retailers continue to grapple with elevated global energy costs.
“I have sought a report on the gas (LPG) price hike. More than that industrial gas and industrial diesel prices have increased at an alarming rate. I am getting a report on it, I will speak on the matter tomorrow,” Shivakumar told reporters in response to a question on the gas price hike.
Indian households continue to pay among the lowest prices for cooking gas globally despite a sharp rise in international LPG prices triggered by disruptions in West Asia, the union government said on Sunday, a day after increasing domestic LPG prices by Rs 29 per cylinder.

Security forces have asked village authorities and civil society in Manipur’s Ukhrul to sensitise youths to not get carried away by violent incidents in other districts, as they carried out a combing operation a day after three people were killed in a gun attack in Kangpokpi.
“To prevent any spillover of recent violence in Kotlen, security forces undertook a combing operation on Saturday in areas around Litan, Mahadev and Sinakeithel” and highway areas in Tangkhul Naga-majority Ukhrul district which shares boundaries with Kuki-majority Kangpokpi district,” police said in a statement.
The development came in the wake of the killing of three civilians in a gun attack at Loibol Khullen village in Kangpokpi district on Friday.
Police said villages of both communities were patrolled jointly, and bunkers were traced and dismantled.
“Village authorities and civil society organisations were approached for their essential support and were assured of the presence of security forces in the area to ward off any threats”, it said.

Former West Bengal sports minister Aroop Biswas has been summoned by the police in connection with a case related to chaos at the Lionel Messi event at Salt Lake Stadium last year, after he failed to appear before the investigators by Friday.
The TMC leader, who had earlier cited health issues and stated that he was not in a position to attend the summons, has been asked to appear before the investigators on June 8.
“We have asked Aroop Biswas to appear before our officers on June 8. A notice has been served to him today,” an officer of Bidhannagar Dakshin police station said.
He was asked to appear before investigators by Friday, after an FIR was lodged against him by the event organiser Shatadru Dutta, accusing the former minister of black-marketing tickets, extortion, criminal intimidation and cheating in connection with the high-profile football event in December, 2005.
The event at the Salt Lake Stadium on December 13, 2025, had descended into chaos after a large number of people entered the venue allegedly without valid access, leading to security breaches and crowd disorder.
Many spectators who had bought expensive tickets complained that they could neither properly see Messi nor enjoy the programme due to overcrowding and mismanagement.
Messi left the ground quickly amid the commotion, following which sections of angry spectators vandalised parts of the stadium.
The controversy had triggered a political storm at the time, with fingers being pointed at the then sports minister Aroop Biswas over alleged lapses in planning and crowd management.

The United States said late Saturday that its forces shot down two Iranian attack drones that it claimed were threatening international maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran despite ongoing efforts to negotiate an end to the conflict.
In a statement posted on X, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said: “Earlier today, US forces in the Middle East shot down two Iranian one-way attack drones that threatened international maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.”
“American forces remain postured and ready to continue defending against Iranian aggression,” it added.
The latest interception comes amid escalating military exchanges between the two sides. CENTCOM said late Friday that US forces had shot down four Iranian attack drones launched toward the strategic waterway before carrying out strikes on Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints, handling a significant share of global oil and gas shipments. Any disruption to shipping in the area raises concerns over regional stability and global energy supplies.
The drone incidents are part of a broader cycle of tit-for-tat attacks that have continued despite weeks of indirect talks between Washington and Tehran aimed at ending the war.
