Norfolk food lovers had options from all over the globe on Saturday.
Residents packed the Delhi Tobacco Museum and Heritage Centre parking lot for the second annual Multicultural Food Festival hosted by the Multicultural Heritage Association of Norfolk.
Based in Delhi, the group’s mission is to promote and encourage cultural awareness in the community. The event had 13 local vendors serving food from the likes of Africa, Mexico, India, Korea, the Philippines and more. Menu items like spring rolls, sausages, tacos, and several other exotic offerings were available.
“It’s a very popular event. We had just under 700 last year,” said Judy Schaeffer, co-organizer alongside Jon Kloepfer. “This year, we managed to secure more vendors and some different vendors as well.”
“As the multicultural society, it’s very important to remember our heritage and also acknowledge all the new and diverse people moving into the area,” Schaeffer added.
Both inside and outside the museum, the property was buzzing as the sweet smell of barbecue and dessert filled the air.
The lineup featured the likes of Devlin’s Bistro, La Hacienda Mexican Restaurant, Lola Letty’s Kitchen, as well as representatives from the town’s German, Hungarian and Polish halls.
The association even partnered with Royal Canadian Legion Branch 125 for a 50/50 draw with a top prize of $2,500.
In addition to the food, this year’s festival included an extended lineup of musical acts.
“So many people – bakeries, businesses and individuals banded together for this,” Schaeffer said.
“The fact that people are embracing different kinds of foods and learning about other cultures, that plays well with the museum because we do a lot of school programming here too,” said Schaeffer, a longtime elementary school teacher, who was named the Citizen of the Year by the Delhi District Chamber of Commerce last month.

“A lot of the multicultural volunteers are also museum volunteers, so we do Portuguese and Moroccan tile art and all kinds of various things.”
