Elevated levels of ground ozone will lower air quality again on Saturday. Please limit strenuous outdoor activity and drink plenty of water. Those with heart or respiratory issues, the young and the elderly are at the highest risk for impacts. You can still be outside and enjoy the dry and warm weather, but please continue to do so safely.
Most of Saturday will be dry with good outdoor time, other than making sure you do not overexert yourself due to the reduced air quality. But there will be a chance for a late-day strong thunderstorm. From around 7 p.m. through 11 p.m., a couple of showers and thunderstorms will approach and move through Long Island. Any of these storms should tend to weaken a bit as they move through Suffolk County. The strongest storms will tend to be north and west of Long Island, but a couple of gusty ones can reach us.
That said, there will be a brief risk of strong wind gusts, hail, downpours and lightning during the middle evening hours. So, keep the outdoor plans with a mix of sun and clouds and a summer-like feel most of the day, but check the News 12 app for live radar and updates on that evening storm chance.
NOTE: HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK — If you will be at an Atlantic Ocean beach before the spotty storm chance, stay out of the water due to a high risk of dangerous rip currents, but you can enjoy some time at the beaches with much of the day dry.
Other than the reduced air quality, it was another nice day with a summer feel and not too much humidity. Most high temperatures on Long Island hit the mid- to upper 80s today, with a few low 90s along the North Shore and some lower 80s along the South Shore.
It will be partly cloudy and mild overnight with lows in the upper 50s to middle 60s.
OVERNIGHT: Partly cloudy and mild. Lows will be in the upper 50s to the mid-60s into early Saturday morning. Wind: south-southwest 5 to 15 mph.
SATURDAY: LATE-DAY THUNDERSTORM — AIR QUALITY ALERT — A mix of sun and clouds. Hot and noticeably humid. Highs will mostly be in the middle to upper 80s. It will be a bit cooler along the South Shore. Most of the day is dry and there will be decent beach weather.
The rip current risk at the South Shore and East End beaches will be high. It is best to stay out of the water for now, but you can certainly enjoy beach and boating time before a brief thunderstorm risk develops after 7 p.m.
There is a chance for a couple of strong thunderstorms moving through Long Island during the middle evening hours. This will be a quick area of potential storms, but could provide strong winds, hail, downpours and frequent lightning. That risk will end before midnight, and any storm should weaken a bit as it moves east. Overnight lows around 68 degrees.
SUNDAY: Sun and clouds. Most of the day is dry, warm and humid. There is a slight chance of a spotty shower in the afternoon and evening. Highs around 85 degrees. Lows near 60 degrees.
MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs near 77 degrees. Lows near 58 degrees.
TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs around 80 degrees. Lows near 60 degrees.
WEDNESDAY: Sun and clouds. Highs around 82 degrees. Lows near 65 degrees.
THURSDAY: Sun and clouds. A few showers possible. Highs around 83 degrees and humid. Lows near 62 degrees.
FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Highs near 82 degrees. Lows near 66 degrees.
