Swedish Consortium Unveils TRUSTAM for AI Quality Assurance – Machine Maker

Swedish software company Interspectral and a consortium of leading industrial and technology partners have secured funding from Sweden’s innovation agency Vinnova to develop TRUSTAM (Trusted Federated Intelligence for Additive Manufacturing), a collaborative initiative aimed at transforming quality assurance and process intelligence in additive manufacturing through secure artificial intelligence technologies.
The project brings together Interspectral, Saab, AMEXCI and Scaleout Systems to address one of the most significant challenges facing industrial-scale additive manufacturing: enabling intelligent process monitoring and quality assurance across multiple production facilities while protecting sensitive manufacturing data and intellectual property.
TRUSTAM has received SEK 7.4 million (€679,000) in funding through Vinnova’s “Industrial Applied AI by Advanced Digitalization 2026” program and will run until April 2028. The initiative will focus on developing and validating federated learning frameworks that allow AI models to be trained collaboratively across geographically distributed manufacturing environments without transferring raw production data.
Federated learning enables organizations to retain sensitive data within local facilities while sharing only model updates, creating a secure approach to building more accurate and effective machine-learning systems. The technology is particularly relevant for industries such as aerospace, defence, energy and other highly regulated sectors where strict security requirements often restrict data sharing between sites.
The consortium will work to establish practical frameworks for secure AI collaboration across production environments while demonstrating the technology in operational aerospace and defence manufacturing settings. Expected outcomes include machine-specific AI models, advanced multimodal process analytics and integrated workflows linking manufacturing monitoring, analysis and quality decision-making.
Interspectral will play a central role in the project by leading the development of localized AI systems designed to operate directly within manufacturing facilities. These systems will learn from machine-specific process data and adapt to unique production conditions, materials and equipment configurations.
The initiative also builds on Interspectral’s AM Explorer platform, which integrates data from monitoring systems, simulations and post-production inspections to provide comprehensive visibility into additive manufacturing processes. The platform is already used by organizations across the metal additive manufacturing sector and has supported broader efforts to improve production reliability and quality assurance.
TRUSTAM reflects the growing convergence of artificial intelligence, digital twin technologies and industrial data infrastructure that is reshaping advanced manufacturing. By enabling secure collaboration between distributed production sites, the project aims to accelerate the adoption of additive manufacturing in safety-critical industries where certification, traceability and real-time quality validation remain essential requirements.
