A man was killed in a shooting involving police at a West Chester apartment complex after officers responded to a 911 call late Thursday night.
The shooting happened on Zinnia Court, just off West Chester Road, in a busy area of West Chester Township, around 9:50 p.m.
According to West Chester officials, officers responded after receiving a call from a nearby resident regarding a woman screaming for help at an apartment complex.
At the scene, officers tried to make contact with the people inside the apartment by knocking on the door and announcing their presence.
Officers decided to force entry into the apartment due to concerns for the safety of those inside. Police said they encountered a man in a bedroom, and the situation escalated, leading to the shooting.
The man died at the scene. His identity has not been released pending family notification.
Police said no officers sustained serious injuries in the shooting.
Authorities have not disclosed how many shots were fired, who fired them, or what transpired in the bedroom leading up to the shooting.
In an update Friday morning, police say the woman involved was taken to UC Hospital West Chester with non-life threatening injuries.
West Chester officials stated that the case is now in the hands of state investigators, with the goal of ensuring all shared information is accurate.
In addition to West Chester police, Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers and the coroner were present at the scene overnight. State investigators are working to determine the sequence of events.
