Losing a job can be a major setback, but for one former Oracle software engineer, it became an opportunity to reinvent their career. In a Reddit post that has attracted widespread attention, the engineer revealed how they secured three job offers within 45 days of being laid off and eventually landed a role as an AI engineer.
The engineer said they were among thousands of employees affected by Oracle’s reported workforce reduction on March 31. Rather than dwelling on the setback, they immediately shifted focus towards learning new skills and preparing for interviews.
Starting from scratch, the tech professional spent one to two hours every day studying AI engineering concepts such as transformers and attention mechanisms. Using AI assistant Claude as a guide, they followed a structured 30-day learning plan and built two projects to showcase during interviews.
Alongside AI learning, they devoted several hours daily to practising coding problems and studying system design concepts. The preparation was complemented by a disciplined job search strategy, which included applying for 10 to 15 jobs every day across multiple platforms and updating their professional profiles regularly.
The effort paid off. After interviewing with seven companies, the engineer received three job offers and accepted a position as an AI engineer. Their story has resonated with professionals navigating layoffs, highlighting how continuous learning and persistence can help transform a career setback into a fresh opportunity.
