Quentin Tarantino has been very open about his disappointment with modern Hollywood movies, but one recent film managed to win him over. According to comments he shared in Sight & Sound magazine, the legendary director was highly impressed by Netflix’s crime thriller The Rip, calling it one of the rare new movies that completely held his attention from beginning to end.
The Rip, directed by Joe Carnahan, debuted on Netflix earlier this year. The film stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as police officers who uncover corruption within the Miami-Dade Police Department after discovering millions of dollars connected to cartel money. The cast also includes Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, and Kyle Chandler.
While discussing the current state of cinema, Tarantino admitted that it has become difficult for him to enjoy most new releases. He wrote that many modern films leave him frustrated because of weak storytelling, unrealistic plot points, poor casting choices, and efforts to satisfy audiences rather than tell strong stories.
“Flaws, implausibilities, audience pandering, miscast performers or just plain stupid shit usually torpedoes every new movie coming out of the flavorless sausage factory that used to call itself Hollywood,” Tarantino wrote in Sight & Sound.
Despite those criticisms, The Rip stood out from the crowd. Tarantino said the movie immediately grabbed him and never lost his interest.
“A suspenseful new movie has come out that did grab me and held me for its entire duration,” he wrote.
The filmmaker praised nearly every part of the production. He highlighted Joe Carnahan’s directing, the performances from the cast, and the visual style of the movie. He also singled out cinematographer Juan Miguel Azpiroz for helping create the film’s look.
Most of all, Tarantino was impressed by the screenplay written by Joe Carnahan and Michael McGrale. According to him, the script is what makes the movie work so well.
“The film is an exciting cop thriller with a novel premise that manages to deliver the goods in really clever ways,” Tarantino wrote. “The whole package worked for me: Carnahan’s direction, the splendid cast, the look of the film (courtesy of cinematographer Juan Miguel Azpiroz) – but the real powerhouse component of this splendid collection is the sensational screenplay by Carnahan and Michael McGrale.”
The praise is notable because Tarantino rarely speaks this positively about recent films. In the same Sight & Sound piece, he explained that he often struggles to connect with modern movies and usually finds himself criticizing them while watching.
He also revealed that even films he enjoyed over the past several years did not completely capture the feeling he used to get from cinema.
“I’ve seen movies I liked since then – ‘West Side Story’ (2021); ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ Chapter 1 and 2 (both 2024), a few others, but nothing that really held me in its grip and swept me away to the magical land of enjoyment that I use to visit regularly and was the reason I loved movies above all other artforms. These days I’d rather read a book,” he wrote.
That makes his reaction to The Rip even more significant. At a time when Tarantino says he has become increasingly disappointed with Hollywood, the Netflix thriller succeeded where many other recent movies failed. Based on his comments in Sight & Sound, The Rip delivered the kind of engaging and entertaining experience he feels has become rare in modern cinema.
The Rip is currently available to stream on Netflix.
