TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taichung Port said Wednesday it has improved surveillance with AI cameras, per Taiwan International Port Corporation.
TIPC Taichung Port Chief Secretary Chen Su-fang (陳素芳) said they improved upon the manual vessel tracking system by installing rotating thermal cameras on tall buildings to automatically track and alert nearby agencies of unidentified vessels. This has significantly reduced the need for 24-hour monitoring and patrols, allowing first responders to focus on actual emergencies and clearance decisions.
TIPC administrative Vice President Kao Chuan-kai (高傳凱) said all seven major ports around Taiwan frequently receive unidentified ships, fishing boats or yachts that raise security concerns. Suao and Taipei Port are the last to complete the upgrade, per Liberty Times.
Nationwide port security automation has allowed for greater coverage of port entryways, as the conventional method stalls clearance due to restricted frequency and field of view between vessels and the control center. Integration of AI vessel image identification, algorithm recognition and warning mechanism accelerates the whole process, per CNA.
