Protesters have gathered outside Delaney Hall in Newark for more than a week to support detainees who allege inadequate medical care, poor living conditions and delays in immigration proceedings, which DHS denies. Detainees have reportedly staged hunger strikes and labor strikes.
Federal officials have accused protesters of threatening law enforcement officers and engaging in violent behavior.
The atmosphere outside Delaney Hall remained tense Saturday as demonstrators supporting the detainees were confronted by protesters who showed up to support ICE officers there.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who last year was arrested outside Delaney Hall during an oversight visit, later imposed a nightly curfew around the facility, citing public safety concerns.
President Donald Trump on Saturday suggested canceling planned performances for the Great American State Fair in Washington this summer after several musicians pulled out of the event.
“We should have a giant MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY, for 250, instead of having overpriced singers, who nobody wants to hear,” the president said, adding: “Cancel it.”
Trump is slated to speak at the fair’s opening ceremony in June as part of the nation’s milestone birthday celebrations. He posted earlier Saturday that he would look into hosting an “America is Back” rally at the “same time, same location.”
Danielle Alvarez, a spokesperson for the Trump-backed Freedom 250 group behind the event, said Saturday that the president would “personally kick off this historic celebration” on June 24.
Israeli forces captured a strategic site in Lebanon across the Litani River, marking Israel’s deepest incursion into the country in 26 years.
The capture of Beaufort Ridge, the site of a medieval castle, comes after days of intense fighting in southern Lebanon, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying Sunday the seizure marks a “dramatic change” in Israeli strategy.
The river has become a de facto boundary in Lebanon since Israel’s invasion, with large areas to the south under Israeli military control and residents ordered to leave. Israeli forces had already begun striking and destroying bridges over the Litani that connect the south to the rest of the country. Israel’s military says they were being used by Hezbollah to smuggle weapons and move fighters.
Former Vice President Mike Pence said Sunday that President Donald Trump’s second administration has “departed” from traditional conservative principles.
Pence, who served as Trump’s vice president from 2017 to 2021, told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” that the administration is no longer committed to “the conservative agenda that has defined the Republican Party since the days of Ronald Reagan, and before that an agenda of American leadership, limited government, free market economics, the right to life.”
Pence was particularly critical of the Justice Department’s “anti-weaponization fund,” calling it a “bad idea from the start,” and said he found it “deeply offensive” that Jan. 6 rioters who were charged and sentenced for their actions at the Capitol in 2021 could receive payouts.
Later in the show, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear told moderator Kristen Welker that “Texas is in play” for Democrats in this year’s Senate race after state Attorney General Ken Paxton beat Sen. John Cornyn in last week’s Republican primary.
Beshear, a Democrat, said that “Democrats have never run against a candidate like Ken Paxton that is so corrupt that his own party impeached him. This is someone who does not have the character … to serve as AG or even as dog catcher.”
First came “Iron Lung,” a video game adaptation. Three months later, “Obsession” pulled off a rare box office feat. And now, A24’s “Backrooms” has dominated the weekend.
Success aside, all three films have one thing in common: They were all helmed by YouTubers, a new force in indie horror. The trend shows studios have realized they can benefit from filmmakers who already generate authentic online buzz — especially with Gen Z audiences, whose theater attendance is rising.
“Horror has always created a special connection between creators and audiences,” said Adam Lowenstein, director of the Horror Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh. “The YouTube generation understands that language.”
But it’s not always an easy path for a creator to transition from having full control to going through the studio system, and coming from the internet world still sometimes carries a stigma in Hollywood.
The San Antonio Spurs ousted the Oklahoma City Thunder, the reigning champions, in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals, 111-103, to advance to the NBA Finals.
The Spurs will now face the New York Knicks. It’ll be a rematch from 27 years ago, when the teams met in the 1999 finals won by San Antonio and its twin-tower duo of David Robinson and Tim Duncan.
This time around, the team is led by another enormously talented man in 7-foot-4 Victor Wembanyama, the sensational former No. 1 pick who is only in his third NBA season. He had a team-high 22 points and seven rebounds Saturday.
To emigrate, you have to be incredibly brave, leaving your home, your business, your job, your colleagues, your family, everything. … I came with my life in a 10-kilo (22-pound) suitcase. Spain is a country that welcomes immigrants.
In Spain, an extraordinary process is underway that is expected to legalize the status of more than 500,000 undocumented immigrants.
