LAWRENCE — Kansas baseball and Arkansas faced off Sunday in a rematch, as the NCAA tournament continued in Lawrence, and KU came away with a 13-10 victory that delivered the program the NCAA regional title.
The Jayhawks, hosting the regional in Lawrence, had already defeated the Razorbacks 5-3 on Saturday during the four-team regional. Arkansas had avoided elimination earlier on Sunday with a win over Northeastern, setting up this rematch. But No. 2 seed Arkansas wasn’t able to keep its season alive, and No. 1 seed Kansas will advance to a super regional.
Here’s what happened inside Hoglund Ballpark:
Kansas is the NCAA regional champion, after allowing just one run in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure a 13-10 victory. Boede Rahe finished this one on the mound again for the Jayhawks. It’s time for Lawrence to celebrate.
Kansas and Arkansas each scored two runs in the eighth inning, and now the game will head to the ninth with KU leading 13-9. Kansas’ runs came on a bases-loaded walk by Jordan Bach and a sacrifice fly from Dylan Schlotterback. Boede Rahe is on the mound for Kansas.
Josh Dykhoff added to KU’s lead with a three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning, and after Arkansas added two runs in the bottom of the sixth the Jayhawks lead 11-7 through seven innings. Riane Ritter is on the mound for KU, and after allowing Arkansas to get runners on second and third base with one out struck out back-to-back batters to get out of the inning. Arkansas isn’t going away, but it’s running out of opportunities.
Kansas has stormed back and now holds an 8-5 lead through five innings, after scoring six runs in the top of the fourth inning and two more in the top of the fifth. Tyson LeBlanc hit a three-run home run during KU’s electric fourth inning performance. The momentum is squarely with the Jayhawks now, as Arkansas tries to figure out what it’s doing on the mound.
Kansas is in search of some momentum right now, after allowing Arkansas to take a 5-0 lead through three innings. Mathis Nayral started for the Jayhawks on the mound, and didn’t make it very far. KU has already used three pitchers so far today, while Arkansas has been able to stick with its starter.
