How to use YouTube’s new AI podcast features, auto speed and on-the-go mode – Storyboard18

YouTube is making a bigger play for podcast listeners with a new set of AI-powered Premium features designed to make discovery, listening and multitasking easier. The updates include an “On-the-go mode” for background listening, an adaptive “Auto speed” playback feature and AI-powered podcast recommendations through Ask Music.
The move comes as YouTube says podcasts now attract more than 1 billion monthly viewers globally, while Premium users watched more than 800 million hours of podcast content in April 2026 alone.
Here’s how the new features work — and how you can start using them.
How to Use YouTube’s On-the-Go Mode
On-the-go mode is designed for users who listen to podcasts while commuting, exercising or multitasking. Instead of focusing on video, the feature shifts YouTube into a more audio-first experience with simplified controls and easier navigation.
What the feature does – Simplifies playback controls – Makes skip forward and rewind easier to access – Reduces visual distractions during listening – Optimizes background playback for podcasts and talk-heavy videos
The mode can also show larger controls and a cleaner playback interface better suited for audio listening.
How to turn it on 1.Open a podcast or long-form talk video on YouTube 2.Tap the settings or “More” menu during playback 3.Go to Premium controls 4.Select “On-the-go mode”
Some reports suggest YouTube may also trigger the feature automatically if your phone detects movement for an extended period while content is playing.
Who can access it – Currently available for YouTube Premium users on Android – iOS rollout is expected in the coming months

How to Use YouTube’s Auto Speed Feature
Auto speed is YouTube’s new adaptive playback tool that automatically changes listening speed depending on the pacing of the conversation.
Instead of manually locking playback at 1.5x or 2x speed, YouTube dynamically speeds up slower moments and slows down denser or information-heavy sections.
What Auto Speed does – Speeds through pauses or slower speech – Slows down during complex discussions – Aims to save listening time without hurting comprehension – Works especially well for interviews, educational podcasts and long discussions
The feature is part of YouTube’s broader effort to make long-form listening more efficient for mobile users.
How to enable Auto Speed 1.Open a video or podcast episode 2.Tap playback settings 3.Select “Playback speed” 4.Choose “Auto speed”
The feature is currently available for Premium users on Android, with iOS support coming later.
How to Get AI Podcast Recommendations With Ask Music
YouTube is also expanding its AI-powered Ask Music tool into podcasts. Previously focused on generating playlists and radio stations, the feature can now recommend podcasts using conversational prompts.
What you can ask
Users can search for podcasts by: – Mood – Genre – Activity – Favorite creators or existing shows
For example: – “Recommend funny business podcasts” – “Give me relaxing podcasts for commuting” – “Find podcasts similar to Lex Fridman” – “Suggest short true crime episodes”
How to use Ask Music for podcasts 1.Open the YouTube Music app 2.Navigate to Ask Music 3.Type or speak a podcast request 4.Browse AI-generated recommendations
The feature is currently available only in select countries for YouTube Music Premium and Premium subscribers.
Why These Features Matter
The updates signal YouTube’s growing ambitions in podcasting as competition intensifies between YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Unlike traditional audio apps, YouTube benefits from video creators, recommendation algorithms and cross-platform viewing habits.
The company is increasingly positioning podcasts as a central part of its Premium subscription strategy, especially as video podcasts become mainstream and audiences spend more time consuming long-form creator content.
With AI now being integrated into discovery and playback, YouTube appears to be betting that smarter listening tools — not just bigger content libraries — will define the next phase of podcast streaming.
As the creator economy explodes, influencer marketing agencies are emerging as the real power brokers reshaping how corporate India spends its advertising money.
