CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Members of the Cheyenne City Council and other city officials gathered in Lions Park on Thursday to celebrate the recently updated facilities at Dunbar Field. Renovations include new lights, bleachers, fencing, restrooms, concessions and a backstop.
“Today is about investing in our community,” Cheyenne Mayor Patrick Collins said to the crowd before pulling out the scissors and, alongside members of the City Council, cutting the ceremonial ribbon. “It’s about investing in places where kids play, families gather and, frankly, where memories are made.”
The city poured around $1.7 million into the project through grants, a matching grant fund, lottery dollars and community facility fees. Collins said that the upgrade should serve athletes, their families and fans for years to come.
While the baseball diamond and surrounding amenities certainly stand out within the storied Lions Park as new, they aren’t the only park infrastructure the city updated. About 400 tons of sand was added to the beach alongside Sloan Lake’s southern shore and more than 400 feet of concrete pathway was laid to improve access to the area. Power lines that crossed over the area were moved underground to make park even more appealing.
“What a great improvement for Cheyenne,” Collins added. “Things like this don’t happen by accident. It’s because we have a great partnership among people who believe in parks and the importance of recreation and the fact that those things matter.”
Improvements at Lions Park are just a part of a series of updates the city has invested in and are going to celebrate early this summer, Collins said. Those include significant upgrades to Cheyenne’s historic Downtown Depot.
