The digital version of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now available to rent or purchase on select platforms, and with it comes a number of new behind-the-scenes details about the production thanks to the included bonus content.
Graphic artists Millo Riccardi, David Pellé, François Boudaille, and Charlotte Mansard provided some interesting insight. They all discussed changes made to a scene involving Peach and Rosalina during production.

While discussing the sequence in which Peach finally frees Rosalina from the cell where she spent much of the film on Planet Bowser, Illumination character animator Charlotte Mansard explained that the “touching and powerful” moment was “supposed to be very short.” Instead, Mansard “wanted to do something very epic” and was given “free rein” to direct and expand the sequence. Initially planned to last just 30 frames, a little over one second, Mansard proposed: “What if we add 400 frames?”
The story highlights the crucial role that often-unsung animators play in the creation of blockbuster films such as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, while also offering an interesting look at how modern animated movies are produced behind the scenes.
The digital version of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie includes more than an hour of bonus behind-the-scenes content. We have more information about the release here.
Also, based on some recent comments, it looks like we’ll be getting a third Mario movie in 2029.
